Have you ever been inspired by a book ….. and song lyrics ?
Recently I finished the book Hunger by Roxane Gay and the song Beautiful by Christine Aguilera popped into my head ! The book dealt with physical and emotional damage, acceptance, learning to love ourselves no matter how damaged we are and that life goes on, that we will have other chances (through our efforts) to be the person we want to be. This project came about through these ideas, it included mistakes in the process, finding solutions and to not be pinned down by perfection.
The Alterations Pondering Words designed by Tim Holtz were the ideal choice !
Don’t you love these lyrics ?
The texture on the Butterfly, the splatters of paints all reflect the ups and downs in our lives and inspite of them, we can still thrive.
Here’s the list of Sizzix supplies used and you can find them on Sizzix.com
Thinlits Pondering Words, Thin
Bigz Layered Butterfly with Texture Fades
Bigz Movers and shapers Baroque
Little Sizzles Mat Board
Others : 6 x 8 Canvas, Distress Paints and Crayons, Ranger Crackle Paste, Prima Paint. FineTec Gold.
I can NEVER do without the Little Sizzles Mat Board ! They are lightweight, the Bigz dies cut through them like butter, they are durable and the white is easily painted any colour you like. Die cut the Baroque shape, a Butterfly and a few Scrolls.
Initially I wanted the piece to be a romantic dark red, so on went the paint, and after that a random layer of Texture Crackle Paste using a stencil.
Well ….. the red was too shocking (LOL !!) …. and I decided to soften it with a wash of Distress Paint Spun Sugar. Pretty much like Life yes ? We hit a snag, make adjustments, then move forward !
Dry completely with a heat tool
In this next step, paint the scrolls a light pink, and adhere the them to fit the butterfly. You will notice on the lower right wing, the rose design of the texture paste was left uncovered.
Trim off the Scroll’s excess bits.
I’ve sort of joined the *Shine and Shimmer* team with the new acrylics and Unicorn Hair by Prima adds a lovely gold polish that shows off the matte surface of the scrolls. Apply the paint with a small brush to the center portions of the butterfly.
Next, add interest to the sroll with a cursive stamp. You really don’t have to be perfect about this, any small background, word or number stamp would work.
Rub in brown Distress Ink along the edges of the Butterfly, and I added splatters of gold and bronze paint just for fun.
Smooth on a thin layer of Distress Crackle Paste on the Baroque die-cut and once it’s dry (with the crackles showing), paint a light wash of Shabby Shutters Distress Paint.
Add more depth with Distress Crayons Spun sugar and Mustard Seed.
Remember the mistake I mentioned ? Well the red paint canvas was too dramatic for this piece as I wanted a more tentative, softer feel. A light wash with white gesso toned down the fierceness of the red and rubbing in Spun Sugar and Mustard Seed Distress Crayons gave it dimension.
The word Beautiful from the Pondering Words Thinlits was cut out using a scrap piece of watercolour paper, given shadings of yellow and pink with Distress Crayons, then a thin layer of Crackle Paste. After it dried, I gave the paper strip a quick rub of brown Distress Ink around the edges
Assemble all the pieces and add the song lyrics. This was typed out using the Typecast typewriter, the strips trimmed out and adhered to the canvas.
When working on any mixed media project, I try to help crafters understand that perfection is NOT the end product. It’s much easier to work gently, slowly, on your creation using the suggestions here ….. your work does not have to be an exact replica.
Thank you for visiting me today, get out your paints, die cut some shapes, and just start ! Have Fun !
